Groups that are only accessing the trails will be using their own bikes. They are responsible for managing the safety of the group, including carrying out a Risk Assessment, ensuring that the group has adequate insurance, that bikes are checked and helmets worn at all times. The excursion leader will need to be in charge of medications and consent forms that their organisation are likely to require.
Always check the weather forecast in advance to ensure you have the right clothing and that it is safe to venture out.
It is essential that bikes are checked before heading out on the trails. We will always do an M-check as a group that covers the main elements of brakes, tyres, steering and frame integrity. See details of a Bike M Check below.
Carry an appropriate pump, tool kit and spare inner tube.
Anyone riding the trails must wear a helmet at all times. See below for how to correctly fit your helmet.
Shoes should be sturdy with a grippy sole and not open-toe. Trainers are fine. Bear in mind that these may well get muddy so don’t wear your best party sneakers!
We recommend gloves to protect your hands in the event of a fall.
Wear non-flappy sweat pants or legging, a mid-layer top on cooler days and a showerproof jacket if it is likely to rain. Luckily on our trails you are never so far from base.
We recommend that you ride in company on any technical terrain.
Ensure your phone is charged and you have a map of the location. Know the numbers for emergency services and be able to describe where you are in case of emergency.
If you have to ride alone ensure you let someone know when to expect you home.
Be aware of when you reach the limits of your capabilities. There is no shame in getting off and pushing around an obstacle.
Get off the bike and look at technical features on foot before attempting them for the first time.
